And so it begins...

Winter may have just started, but plans are underway to install Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes in Peterswood Park before the ground freezes. Why so soon, you may ask. Well, the bluebirds are going to start looking for places to nest by February so we  have to get the poles into the ground before it freezes. That way, the homes will be ready when the birds are. I'll be posting photos of the boxes as we complete them. One is built and five others are on the "assembly line," with all the pieces of wood cut.

Peterswood Park has a nice population of Eastern Bluebirds, which I have been watching for quite awhile. By placing nesting boxes in the park, we can encourage the population to grow. Bluebirds in general have lost habitat over the years, making it more difficult for them to thrive. Additionally, some other species tend to "crowd out" the bluebirds, aggressively taking over available nesting cavities. By building boxes specific to bluebirds, the bluebirds have a higher chance of finding a place to live and fledge young.

Please do not disturb the nesting boxes. These birds and their boxes are actually protected by state and federal laws. I am trained in handling and monitoring birds and will be monitoring their nests for the entire breeding season. If you see a problem, please email me at BluebirdsPT@outlook.com.

I will be posting photos of any nests and birds fledged from these boxes, so look for photos in the spring-summer.

If you are interested in putting a bluebird box in your yard, or starting a bluebird box trail, email me at the above address.
